A new paper by Ronald Batallas, and Dr. Maya Evenden titled “Influence of crop variety and fertilization on oviposition preference and larval performance of a generalist herbivore, the true armyworm, Mythimna unipuncta”, has been published in Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata.
This paper investigates the preference–performance relationship of a generalist herbivore, the true armyworm, Mythimna unipuncta (Haworth) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae, Leucaniini). They evaluated the effect of crop species, cultivars, and fertilization rate on host use by adult and larval M. unipuncta in both laboratory and field experiments.

A new paper by Ronald Batallas, and Dr. Maya Evenden titled “Influence of Host Plant Species and Fertilization Regime on Larval Performance and Feeding Preference of the Redbacked Cutworm and the Pale Western Cutworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)”, has been published in The Journal of Economic Entomology.
The paper evaluates the influence of annual crop species (canola, field peas, and spring wheat) and host fertilization on the larval performance and feeding preference of the redbacked cutworm and the pale western cutworm.

The Evenden Lab at their annual Secret Santa exchange and potluck last week to celebrate the end of the semester and the beginning of the holidays. What we weren’t expecting was a visit from Santa Claus!
Congratulations to Maggie MacDonald for receiving a Student Travel Award to attend the Western Forum on Pest Management in Kelowna, BC. 
This forum consists of a widely-based group of pest management experts and researches who meet annually to determine best practices for integrated pest control in Western Canada. The goal is to determine the integrated pest management methods that are cost-effective and do not adversely affect the health of individuals, livestock, wildlife or the environment.
Congratulations to all the Evenden lab members who presented this year at the ESAB & ESS JAM in Cypress Hills, AB.

This weekend the Evenden Lab will head to Cypress Hills for 6th Joint Meeting: Entomological Societies of Alberta and Saskatchewan! Stay tuned for photos of presenters.
We kicked off the end of the summer (almost) with a BBQ at Maya’s hosted by her and Steve. We celebrated Boyd Mori’s new position at the U of A and his family’s return to Edmonton, Kelsey Jones’ job offer in Winnipeg, the launch of Bugs 101 and the (almost) completion of the 2019 field season.
