Alberta has monitored chronic wasting disease (CWD) in wild cervids with an active, hunter- based surveillance program since 1998 before CWD was first detected. The program has provided key data for understanding sex-age patterns of CWD within species and monitoring changes in geographic distribution of CWD over time. In the face of continued CWD spread, an efficient approach to monitoring CWD is weighted surveillance. The approach can be used to optimize resources for CWD sampling and testing while ensuring the adequacy in meeting detection goals (e.g., 95% confidence of detecting 1 case if prevalence is > 1%). In this application, we propose to work with SpeedGoat Wildlife Solutions (SG) to modify their currently available surveillance tools for monitoring CWD in mule deer in Alberta. The current SG models are based on weights for age/sex classes using prevalence data from Colorado and do not include spatial risk factors, which are well studied in Alberta (Smolko et al. 2021). The modifications will improve the capacity of SG’s surveillance tool to 1) retrospectively assess the adequacy of past sampling, 2) optimally design, province-wide surveillance in the future, and 3) provide a more rigorous tool for assessing actual changes in CWD in wildlife management units (WMUs) over time with and without management. Adapting the tool for Alberta is especially relevant now to inform sampling along the CWD leading edge in the foothills, boreal, and core endemic areas along the Alberta/Saskatchewan border and for use in CWD modeling efforts.
