Current Research Interests

My laboratory examines immunity as a critical node in the relationship between hosts, pathogens, and the environment. We look for immunological successes across evolution, and apply them to improve human and animal health, and decrease our impact on the environment. Our strengths are in primary cell culture, in vivo infection models, behavioural analyses, and functional evaluation of immune responses.

Projects are often inter- or trans- disciplinary with collaborations across academia, industry, and government. Over the years, our studies have offered important insights into antimicrobial protection, inflammation control, and wound repair. They have also provided novel bioindicators of health which we continue to apply to infection disease control, nutritional studies, and environmental risk assessments.

I hold appointments in the Department of Biological Sciences, and the Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Science at the University of Alberta.

1) Fever as an evolutionary conserved mediator of health.
2) Improved health and performance in cold-blooded animals through dynamic temperature control.
3) A natural antibiotic alternative for decreased pathogen spread and enhanced coastal and marine ecosystem health.
4) Promoting resilience of coastal communities through sustainable fish production.
