Inquiries about lab tours and other programs should be directed to Howard Gibbins (gibbins@ualberta.ca). The following programs are ones in which the Dino Lab currently participates.
WISEST
The Dino Lab has been working with the WISEST (Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science, and Technology) program for the past three years, and have hosted six grade eleven students to date who have completed the program successfully.
Grade eleven girls interested in working in the Dino Lab are encouraged to consult the WISEST website for further information.
In 2020, the Dino Lab also participated in the WISEST Choices conference. This program introduces grade six girls to the university, and allows them to participate in a full day of activities focused on science. More information about the Choices program can be found here.
WISEST 2021 Summer Research Program (SRP)
Students interested in the WISEST 2021 SRP will have the opportunity to choose from three possible projects. Those interested can find more information by contacting Howard Gibbins (gibbins@ualberta.ca) and at the WISEST SRP webpage.
- Morphometric Analysis
Requires computer time, researching relevant literature via remote access to the library, and material requests for relevant specimens. - Species Distribution Analysis
Requires computer time, researching relevant literature via remote access to the library, and material requests for relevant specimens. - Site Map Correlation
Requires computer time, sorting scanned site maps by year and species, and editing maps as needed.
U School
The Dino Lab has been an active participant in the U School program for a number of years. This program allows elementary school students to visit the university for a full week and see some of the work done on campus. It is hoped that this will inspire them to apply to university when they graduate from high school.
Science FUNday
The Dino Lab is also a participant in Science FUNday, along with numerous other labs at the university. During this day-long activity, visiting students and their parents/guardians have the opportunity to take in many science-related demonstrations. The Dino Lab offers tours of the preparation space so that students can see first-hand what is done to make the dinosaur fossils suitable for research use.
More information about Science FUNday can be found on the websites for the Faculty of Science and Science FUNdamentals.
