To do this, we have adopted and modified the following code of conduct from our good colleagues at the <a href=\"https:\/\/grad.biology.ualberta.ca\/evenden\/\">Evenden<\/a> lab.<\/p>\n<p>Our guiding principles are:<\/p>\n<p><b>Professionalism<\/b>\u00a0(lab setting, field setting, and general setting):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Effective communication is key (email, face to face, lab calendars)\n<ul>\n<li>Directly address issues asap<\/li>\n<li>Open to constructive feedback from lab members<\/li>\n<li>Express gratitude<\/li>\n<li>Allowing everyone an equal opportunity to participate in lab and social settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Punctual for meetings, considerate of others time<\/li>\n<li>Being prepared for meetings and other lab duties<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining lab cohesion and interaction among your lab members\n<ul>\n<li>Collaboration means helping others and receiving help<\/li>\n<li>Nurture lab environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Accepting responsibility of your mistakes\n<ul>\n<li>Proactive to prevent similar issues in the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Transparency of research, follow \u201cResearch and Scholarship Integrity Policy\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>Academic honesty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Maintain research integrity\n<ul>\n<li>No data is better than bad data<\/li>\n<li>Maintain records at all times<\/li>\n<li>Label everything<\/li>\n<li>Keep backup copies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>No gossiping\n<ul>\n<li>Within or out of lab<\/li>\n<li>Targeting specific lab members<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mindful of others schedules, provide sufficient notice when asking for help\n<ul>\n<li>Assume everyone is as busy or busier than you<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Mindful of personal boundaries of others\n<ul>\n<li>This includes personal space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Do not distract others while working<\/li>\n<li>Strive for positive attitude<\/li>\n<li>Everyone\u2019s research is equally important<\/li>\n<li>All questions are good questions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Respecting shared work spaces<\/b>\u00a0(field\/lab):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Safety comes first, if in doubt ask<\/li>\n<li>Following all standard operational procedures<\/li>\n<li>Treating equipment with respect\n<ul>\n<li>If equipment (lab\/field) is broken or malfunctioning, ensure fixed asap<\/li>\n<li>If you don\u2019t know how to use it, ask<\/li>\n<li>Clean after use (do your dishes)<\/li>\n<li>Ensure equipment is maintained at a functional level, including trucks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cleaning up your work space and communal space<\/li>\n<li>Communicate use of \u201cstation\u201d, make available when not in use centralize equipment<\/li>\n<li>Guidelines for mentorship, do not dump work on summer students.
