\"\"<\/td>\nRassol Bahreini (Senior researcher):<\/span>\u00a0I have been a honey bee researcher for over 30 years . I have received my MSc and PhD in Entomology from the University of Ahvaz (Iran, 1993) and the University of Manitoba<\/a> (Canada, 2015), respectively. <\/span>In my previous positions, as Apiculture Research Scientist in the Animal Science Research Institute-Iran, and Alberta Agricultural and Forestry-Canada, I carried out many studies of honey bee biology, control of parasites and pathogens, integrated pest management, and studies of Varroacides. In addition to teaching graduate and undergraduate students, my extension activities encouraged beekeepers to adopt new and improved methods of honey bee IPM to manage pests and diseases, using a variety of methods. My recent projects were focused on new miticides and antibiotics to assist producers in solving challenges related to honey bee parasites and diseases. At the University of Alberta, I continue my research on the development of new miticides and antibiotics for control Varroa mites and Nosema disease.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\"\"<\/td>\nLindsay Ellis (MSc student)<\/span>: I have just completed my final year of my Undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology at the University of Alberta. While working as a lab assistant in plant ecology and later in soil sciences, I gained valuable experience in understanding how experiments are run, along with a love for scientific research. However, I have always had a deep love of insects, and I am excited to begin my MSc at the Rueppell lab. I will be studying how novel hive management strategies impact the spread of viruses in a commercial beekeeping context, working with the Gull Lakes Honey Company<\/a>. I am also interested in how our management of honey bee viruses can impact native pollinators. When I am not working, I enjoy hiking, listening to music, and playing video games.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\"\"<\/td>\nClaudia Garcia Figueroa (PhD student)<\/span>: As an undergraduate, I studied Veterinarian Medicine and Animal Science at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Aut\u00f3noma de M\u00e9xico – UNAM).\u00a0 Then, I got a Master\u2019s Degree in Sciences of Animal Production and Health at the same University under the supervision of Dr. Miguel Arechavaleta; my research project was focused on honeybee genetics, specifically on the effect of hybridization between European and Africanized honeybees on morphological, metabolic and reproductive traits of honeybee queens. I estimated the genetic and epigenetic effects of honeybee queens\u2019 wing beat frequency, weight, forewing length, and ovaries\u2019 size using phenotypic approximation.
\nI am thrilled to start my PhD, extending my work on honeybee genetics and behavior.

\"\"<\/td>\nJacob Herman (PhD student):<\/span> I earned my Bachelors degree in Entomology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where I worked with Dr. Gene Robinson on various components of honey bee neuroethology and evolution. After this, I attained my Master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior under the supervision of Dr. Ulrich Mueller. My thesis focused on studying the ecology and population dynamics of Apis florea<\/i>, the Dwarf Asian Honey Bee, and involved the collection of natural colonies spanning all of India. I have joined the Rueppell lab in hope of continuing my work on Asian Honey Bees, and better understanding the ecology and genetic architecture driving complex adaptations to stress and life history across Apis<\/i>. I have transitioned from UNCG to the UofA.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\"\"<\/td>\nChenoa Kaufman (MSc student):<\/span> I am a recent graduate of the Honors Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology undergraduate program here at the University of Alberta and have recently transitioned to studying in the Rueppell Lab as a graduate student after two years of undergraduate research here. I am interested in honey bee viral disease and honey bee development, which I pursue through my research on the puzzling Black Queen Cell Virus. I aim to understand how and why BQCV kills developing queen bees by examining both host and viral characteristics, and look forward to tackling this challenge throughout my degree. Outside of the lab, I enjoy reading, playing volleyball, building up my Pok\u00e9mon card collection, and being with friends or family!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\"\"<\/td>\nHargun Kochar (Undergraduate student):<\/span>I am currently in my fourth year studying Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta. I am particularly interested in host parasite systems, especially how ecological and physiological factors shape disease dynamics. I am excited to expand my knowledge by working on host virus interactions with Chenoa, focusing on Black Queen Cell Virus. Through this research, I aim to better understand the mechanisms driving viral infection, host immune responses, and why some developing queen bees are more susceptible than others. I am especially interested in how timing of infection and host condition influence disease outcomes. <\/span>Outside of school, I enjoy reading fantasy and science fiction novels, and I love junk journaling which is a mix of scrapbooking and collage! <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\"\"<\/td>\nCarina Lai (Laboratory manager)<\/span>:My research interests broadly encompass molecular ecology and organisms\u2019 responses to environmental stress. I previously received my Bachelor\u2019s degree in Biology from Queen\u2019s University (Undergraduate advisor: Dr. Fran Bonier) and gained experience as a lab technician in Dr. Pedro Antunes\u2019 lab at Algoma University before pursuing a Master\u2019s degree at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Sean Rogers. For my master\u2019s research, I examined the impacts of sedimentation on early-life phenotypic outcomes and gene expression in Coho salmon. In my new position, I am now excited to learn about honey bees. Outside of research, I enjoy hiking and playing musical instruments.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\"\"<\/td>\nAmmy Pacheco (Undergraduate student)<\/span>:I am currently pursuing my B.Sc Honours degree with a major in biological sciences and minor in biochemistry here at the University of Alberta. With a broad major, I have the opportunity to explore many different fields of biology, but my main interests lie in neuroscience and immunology. What drew me to the Rueppell lab was the virology work, I wanted to try out the field and what better way than working with the amazing honeybee! This research has allowed me to practice both lab and field work, going from molecular work with nucleic acids to beekeeping.\u00a0I am an external ambassador for the Canadian Undergraduate Conference on Healthcare (CUCOH) and founded\/lead the CUCOH UAlberta chapter for 2025\/26. I am also an avid science volunteer working with WISEST, Future Energy Systems, and more. \"\"<\/td>\nAjay Poudel (MSc student)<\/span>: With a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural science from the Agriculture and Forestry University in Nepal, and backyard\/farm beekeeping experience since my teenage years, I have developed a deep appreciation for bees because of their role in pollination and the value they convey to the bee-keeping community. Determined to contribute to the existing knowledge on honeybees, I have joined the Rueppell lab as a Master’s student in UofA Department of Biological Sciences, with a motive to work on the honeybee health, specifically, honey bee viruses. I look forward to this opportunity to study the efficacy of putative immunoregulatory substances in virus infected honeybee foraging activity along with exploring the probable immune pathways. As a person who loves to learn, teach, and do research, staying in academia is among my future plans. \"\"<\/td>\nAlyssa Turnbull (PhD student)<\/span>: I am a recent MSc graduate from the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, focusing my research on utilizing bioinformatic techniques to better understand the whirling disease host\u00a0Tubifex tubifex.\u00a0<\/i>My interest in parasitology and invertebrate biology is continuing to grow in my work helping Dr. Bahreini and the Rueppell research group study honey bees and Varroa mites and now transitioning to a PhD under the co-supervision of Stephen Pernal and Olav Rueppell. After graduation, I worked for two years in Sri Lanka as a Temporary Assistant Lecture at the University of Colombo and as a Teaching Assistant at the SLTC Research University. My undergraduate project in constructing a bio-engineered E. coli for biotransformation of alkanes, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Inoka C. Perera, made me further realize my
\nenthusiasm in studying the wonders of the molecular world, my fascination in exploring the dynamic assemblies of macromolecules and mysterious molecular pathways sustaining fundamental cellular processes in all forms of life.
\nI am very excited to be working in the world of honey bees and their viruses in Dr. Reuppell\u2019s lab as a Graduate Research Student. I aim at understanding molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity
