{"id":1665,"date":"2026-07-20T21:52:53","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T21:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grad.biology.ualberta.ca\/merrill\/?page_id=1665"},"modified":"2026-07-20T21:52:53","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T21:52:53","slug":"integrated-population-model-for-cwd","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/grad.biology.ualberta.ca\/merrill\/integrated-population-model-for-cwd\/","title":{"rendered":"Integrated Population Model for CWD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an emergent wildlife disease of primary concern across North America due to population-level declines in free- ranging mule deer and white-tailed deer, which may socio-economic repercussions associated with monitoring and managing the disease The goal of this project is to provide direction and support through biological and economic research for adaptively managing mule deer harvest to control CWD in wild cervids in the face of its spread in Alberta. We will adapt an Integrative Population model (IPM) to include CWD disease transmission and assesses harvest management of mule deer in Alberta for the Prairie and Parkland regions. The IPM approach was chosen because it can reduce the degree to which observation errors and missing data obscure population dynamics outcomes and can provide uncertainty assessments. Further, the IPM approach is being used by other Fish and Wildlife Agencies who also are addressing CWD management.
